Collection: Alphonse Mucha

Painter, illustrator and graphic artist Alphonse Mucha was born in Southern Moravia (currently the Czech Republic) in 1860. He was always passionate about drawing, but his talent for singing allowed him to go to school in Brno, the capital city of Moravia. Mucha played the violin and was an alto singer. After school, he took decorative drawing jobs and designed theatrical scenery in Vienna. After changing several jobs and cities, Mucha moved to Paris in 1887. He continued his studies in Académie Julian and Academie Colarossi while drawing for magazines and advertisements. His magazine illustrations led to book illustrations.

Mucha's career took a dramatic turn when he started working with Sarah Bernhardt. He designed theatrical posters and gained wide recognition for his successful work.

The success of the Bernhardt posters brought Mucha commissions for advertising posters. Idéal Chocolate, JOB cigarette papers, Moët-Chandon champagne, Lefèvre-Utile biscuits, Nestlé baby food, Ruinart Champagne, the Beers of the Meuse, Trappestine brandy, and Waverly and Perfect bicycles were among his clientele. His colorful and stylized posters are perfect examples of the spirit of the time. His work reflects the Art Nouveau style at his best.

Our collection here focuses on his exquisite advertisement works and ornamental nature depictions.
